Monster Truck Storage: Where to Put Trucks That Don't Fit a Hot Wheels Shelf
Share
If you have ever tried to park a Monster Jam truck in a Hot Wheels rack, you already know the problem: it sits proud of the slot, tips forward, and ends up back on the floor. Monster truck storage is its own problem, because monster trucks are not scaled-up cars — they are the same length as a 1:64 car with wheels nearly twice as deep.
Most monster truck storage ideas fail on one measurement. Here is how to match the storage to the trucks you actually own, using the real slot measurements from our racks rather than guesswork.
Why don't monster trucks fit a Hot Wheels display rack?
Because the slots are built for a car body, not a wheel. A standard 1:64 rack gives each car a slot about 90mm wide, 44mm tall and 47mm deep. A Monster Jam truck needs roughly double that in two directions. Our own two racks make the gap obvious:
| Rack | Slot size (W × H × D) | Built for |
|---|---|---|
| 1:64 car racks (JCAR 30 / 60 / 105 / Garage / Truck) | 90 × 44 × 47 mm | Hot Wheels, Matchbox, Pixar Cars |
| 1:43 rack (JCAR 65) | 130 × 51 × 47 mm | Longer collector models — still only 47mm deep |
| Monster truck rack (JCAR Monster) | 123 × 88 × 80 mm | Monster Jam, Hot Wheels Monster Trucks |
- Depth is the dealbreaker — 80mm vs 47mm. Big wheels need somewhere to go.
- Height matters too — 88mm vs 44mm. A truck is twice as tall as the car it crushes.
- Length is fine — this is why it almost works, and why people keep trying.
Going up a scale does not fix it. The 1:43 rack has longer slots but the same 47mm depth — it solves length, not wheels.
Option 1 — A deep-slot wall rack (the purpose-built answer)
If the collection is mostly 1:64 monster trucks, the Monster Truck Display Rack, 20 Slots — JCAR Monster is the one built for the job: 80mm-deep slots, 50 × 58 × 8cm of wall, solid pine, A$79.
- 20 trucks visible at once — the collection becomes the wall art.
- Deep slots also suit boxed Funko Pop figures, Schleich animals and dinosaurs.
- Pair it with a JCAR 60 so the trucks and the 1:64 cars share one wall.
Option 2 — When the collection outgrows one rack
Twenty slots fills up faster than anyone expects. There are two ways out, both in Display & Storage: add a second rack, or move up to an open shelf.
Two JCAR Monster racks fit across the bottom of the JORA 7 Slim-Line Toy Shelf. The pair measures 116cm wide; the JORA 7 is 120cm. So the shelf can carry the slotted display at the bottom and the overflow above it, on one wall.
Add a second rack beside the first
The racks hang flush, so two JCAR Monster racks give you forty slots and read as one built-in display. Set along the bottom of a JORA 7, as below, the shelf carries the slotted trucks underneath, the 1:64 cars on a ledge, and the big 1:24 trucks up top.
We have written up how that rack system works in full — which racks to combine, and how many fit — in The Modular Diecast Car Display Shelf.
Or switch to an open shelf
If the collection is past slot-counting entirely, give it a wall: the Slim-Line Toy Shelf, 7 Tier — JORA 7 (145 × 120 × 12cm, A$249) holds well over a hundred trucks in rows, with no slot to fit into.
- No lips, no bars — trucks lift on and off without catching, which is the difference between a display that gets used and one that gets knocked over.
- Four of the seven shelves adjust — give the big ones more headroom, keep the rest tight.
- Only 12cm deep — a wall's worth of trucks without a centimetre of floor.
- Same height as our JORY front-facing bookshelves if you want books and trucks on one wall.
Slots sort the collection. Open shelves let it grow. If new trucks arrive faster than you can count slots, switch to the shelf — or do both on one wall.
Option 3 — A closed box (for the ones that get played with)
Racks and shelves are for the collection. For the dozen favourites that come down every day, a box beats a slot — the Wood-Framed Acrylic Storage Box — JBOX (51 × 15.5 × 18cm, A$79) is open at the top, so a truck goes back one-handed.
- Clear acrylic front — the favourites stay findable without tipping the whole thing out.
- Mount it at their height, or stand it on a shelf — about a dozen trucks in a row either way.
- Solid rubberwood with 18cm of headroom, so the tall ones go in upright rather than on their side.
Quick answers
- How many monster trucks fit on one wall? Twenty in a 50 × 58cm slot rack, or well over a hundred on a 145 × 120cm seven-tier shelf.
- Can I mix monster trucks and Hot Wheels in one display? Yes, but not in one rack. Hang a deep-slot rack beside a 1:64 rack; the slot sizes are too different to compromise on.
- Wall-mounted or free-standing? Wall-mounted for anything you want to stay displayed. Free-standing for what gets played with daily.
- What about 1:24 and remote-control trucks? Neither a slot rack nor a 12cm-deep wall shelf takes them. Use a deeper open shelf — the Open-Ended Toy Shelf, 4 Tier — JORA 4 is 30cm deep with a 23cm shelf gap.
- Will it hold Monster Jam specifically? Yes — Grave Digger, El Toro Loco and Megalodon all fit the 80mm slots, as do Hot Wheels Monster Trucks and Thomas & Friends engines.
Where to start
Every monster truck storage decision comes down to two numbers: how many trucks, and how tall the biggest one is. Count them and measure it. Under twenty trucks and under 88mm tall, the deep-slot rack turns the collection into a wall display. More than that, or still growing, and the seven-tier shelf will serve you longer.
