Sized from real books

JORY 5 design drawing: five tier heights measured from real children's books — 15, 24, 30, 20 and 36 cm from top to bottom, 145 cm tall, 120 cm wide, 12 cm deep

We measured the books first, so you don't have to.

We measured hundreds of children's books before setting these five heights. The biggest board books stand face-out on the bottom tier, and anything taller than 36 cm goes on the top, where nothing sits above it.

Pre-cut to clear skirting boards up to 12 cm high and 3 cm deep. If yours is taller, mount the shelf just above it using the included kit.

How many books it holds

Filling a JORY 5, start to finish.

Up to 300 books

Hold the whole collection at once, or use it as a rotating shelf. We'd rotate — swapping the books each week keeps the covers new, and lets the subject follow whatever she is into.

Material & safety

Material & safety
  • Solid pine — no MDF, no veneer
  • Non-toxic finish, safe for kids
  • Rounded edges on every lip and corner
  • Fixing kit for drywall or stud
  • Meets Australian safety standards
Recommended age: 12 months and up. Fix it to the wall before the books go on. Children pull on shelves, and anchoring is what makes that a non-event.

Choosing a finish

Raw wood or varnished?

Raw wood or varnished?

Varnished

A slightly glossy coat that deepens the grain and resists water, stains and everyday wear. Wipes clean.

Pick this for easy cleaning and a sleek, polished look.

Raw wood

Matte and bare, with the grain and knots showing. No protective layer, so it marks more easily in a humid room.

Pick this to keep it natural — or to paint or stain it yourself.

The original

We drew this shelf for our own kids first.

JoyKids began as a sketch on our kitchen table in Melbourne — furniture our own children could actually use, in a house where the skirting board got in the way of every shelf we had bought. We made one. Then we made it for other families.

You will now see our silhouettes from other sellers. What they cannot copy is why each piece is the size it is: that came from measuring what children actually use, not from watching the market.
