Choosing a finish
Raw wood, varnished or white?
Varnished
A slightly glossy coat that deepens the grain and resists water, stains and everyday wear. Wipes clean.
Pick this for easy cleaning and a sleek, polished look.
Raw wood
Matte and bare, with the grain showing, no knots. No protective layer, so it marks more easily in a humid room.
Pick this to keep it natural — or to paint or stain it yourself.
White
The same solid pine under an opaque white coat, so the grain is covered rather than deepened. Wipes clean like the varnish.
Pick this for the shelf to disappear into a white wall.
The original
We drew this shelf for our own kids first.
JoyKids began as a sketch on our kitchen table in Melbourne — furniture our own children could actually use, in a house where the skirting board got in the way of every shelf we had bought. We made one. Then we made it for other families.
You will now see our silhouettes from other sellers. What they cannot copy is why each piece is the size it is: that came from measuring what children actually use, not from watching the market.
